Your Vietnam & Angkor Wat Explorer and Fishing 17Days begins in Hanoi, the capital and cultural heartland of Vietnam.
Your guide will be waiting to meet you on arrival at Noi Bai Airport, and will escort you by private car to your hotel in the centre of the city. The rest of the day will be yours to begin your exploration of Hanoi, which has served as the political and economic centre of Vietnam for the greater part of the past millennium. Today, Hanoi remains the cultural and spiritual heart of the nation.
On day two you will embark on a guided tour of the city with your local guide, beginning at Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum and private residence. Ho Chi Minh was the figurehead of the Vietnamese resistance during the American War and is widely considered to be the father of modern Vietnam, so a visit to his memorial is an excellent way to begin immersing yourself in the history of the country. On the same complex you’ll also find the Presidential Palace, a great, yellow remnant of the city’s colonial history.
The morning’s tour will conclude with a visit to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university. Built in 1070, the temple is a wonderful example of traditional Vietnamese architecture and a monument to the city’s illustrious history as a centre of learning and scholarship.
After lunch, the afternoon will be free for you to spend as you choose. Your guide will be able to provide plenty of suggestions based on your interests and preferences.

Today you will conclude your cruise through Halong Bay, returning to the harbour to meet your guide and river in the later morning. Together you will make your way to Haiphong, where you will leave your entourage and board a plane for the short flight southwards to Danang. At Danang you will be met by another guide, who will convey you to your accommodation on the edge of Hoi An Old Town. The rest of the day will be free for you to explore at your leisure.
With narrow streets, crumbling buildings and a laid-back pace of life, Hoi An is one of the most appealing and unintimidating places in Vietnam to wander under your own steam, exploring the riverside cafés and indulging in a bit of people-watching. If you fancy something more active, meanwhile, you might like to rent bicycles and head out into the surrounding countryside. The choice is yours, as day five will be yours to spend however you wish.
On day 11 you will have another day at leisure to explore Hoi An. We recommend a half-day visit to the ruins of My Son, a rare remnant of Vietnam’s ancient, Hindu past. Located 40 kilometres to the southwest of Hoi An, My Son consists of dozens of crumbling red-brick towers dating from the 7th to the 13th century, set in a lush green valley.
If you would like fishing in Hoi An, please mention this to us at the time of booking !
Day 12 : Ho Chi Minh city (B/L)
Fly south to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s vibrant and exciting second city.
This morning your guide will collect you from your hotel and drive you back to Danang in time for your flight onward to Ho Chi Minh City – also known by its old name, Saigon. On arrival at the airport, you will meet your local guide who will accompany you to your hotel by private car.
Your hotel is conveniently located in District One, right at the heart of the city, so this is a fantastic base to begin some urban exploration. This afternoon your guide will lead you on a walking tour of the city’s highlights, including the Independence Palace (where the Vietnam War was concluded), Notre Dame Cathedral, Benh Thanh Market and Dong Khoi Street – famous for its French colonial architecture.
Day 13 : Mekong Delta Cruise (B/L)
Head south from the city today into the evocative Mekong Delta.
On day eight you will continue your journey further south to the Mekong Delta, the fertile “rice bowl” of Vietnam. Here you will board a board and begin a relaxing river cruise, which will end at your lodge accommodation deep in the heart of the delta.
As you make your way along these waterways there will be ample opportunity to observe rural life unfolding around you, as children play on the riverbanks and vendors ply their trade from boats at the local floating markets. You will also have the chance to disembark this afternoon to explore the region on foot or by bike, before arriving at your accommodation tonight.
Overnight: Mango Home Riverside
Day 14-17 : Angkor Wat (B/L)
It’s time to leave Vietnam and head over to Cambodia for a spectacular conclusion to your Indochina adventure.
After breakfast at your lodge on the morning of day nine, you will begin the journey back to Ho Chi Minh City – with a stop at one of the area’s many floating markets along the way. Once you arrive in the city, it’s time to wave goodbye to Saigon and board your plane to Siem Reap in Cambodia. After making your way through customs and immigration, your guide will be waiting to drive you the short distance to your hotel in town, where the rest of the day will be free to spend as you choose.
On day 15: you will commence the Cambodian leg of your adventure in earnest. Accompanied by your knowledgeable guide, you will rent bicycles and head out amongst the many temple ruins of the Angkor Archaeological Park.
This UNESCO-protected zone, which covers an area of 400 square kilometres in total, is the site of what was once Southeast Asia’s most powerful empire. The region contains numerous spectacular examples of Khmer architecture from between the ninth and 14th centuries, and today you will begin by visiting the ancient city of Angkor Thom – home to the giant Bayon faces, the Terrace of the Elephants, and the Terrace of the Leper King. Later this morning you’ll drop in on Ta Prohm, the atmospheric, vine-entangled temple from the Tomb Raider movie, before returning to your hotel for lunch and a rest.
After some time to relax at the hotel (an ideal chance to advantage of the pool and spa facilities!), this afternoon you’ll pay a visit to Banteay Srei, one of Angkor’s best-preserved and most atmospheric temples, before returning to Siem Reap for the evening.
After a busy day of exploration, day 11 makes for a relaxing contrast as you board a cruise on the great Tonle Sap Lake – the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. One of the highlights of the cruise today will be visiting the floating village of Kampong Phluck, where the houses are built on stilts above the water. Depending on when you visit, these may tower above the water level or appear to be floating on its surface.
After a picnic lunch, you will return to Siem Reap for a relaxing afternoon before heading out by tuk tuk to the jewel in Cambodia’s crown: Angkor Wat. Built in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and forms the centrepiece of the Cambodian flag, which should give you some indication of its importance to the Cambodian people. During the late afternoon there will be fewer visitors than during the day, so you will be able to enjoy the miles of incredible carvings with minimal crowds.
Finally, on day 17, it’s time to leave Cambodia behind and head to the airport for your flight home.
