Your boat will bring you back to the harbour in the late morning today, where you’ll meet your guide and driver for the short journey to Haiphong. Here you’ll board a flight south to Danang, where another guide will be waiting to accompany you along the coast to the ancient trading port of Hoi An.
For the next few days, you’ll be staying at your accommodation on Cua Dai Beach – just a few miles from Hoi An Old Town. This will be a great opportunity to have a bit of seaside relaxation, and the region’s laid-back and welcoming atmosphere makes it the ideal place to do a bit of independent exploration.
Amongst the many excellent activities that you might choose to fill your time on day seven, we highly recommend renting bikes to explore the countryside – or, alternatively, arranging a half-day visit to the ruins of My Son: relics of the ancient, vanished Champa Kingdom. Whatever you choose to do, make sure that you keep aside some time to explore the lovely, atmospheric streets of Hoi An town, which have been shaped by thousands of years of international trade and foreign influences.
On day eight you’ll be met at your hotel by your local guide, who will lead you by bicycle into the countryside surrounding Hoi An. Today your family will be getting stuck in with a great variety of Vietnamese rural activities, from traditional fishing in a bamboo basket boat to visiting a water palm plantation and enjoying a fresh seafood lunch. The rest of the afternoon will be free for you to relax on the beach near your accommodation.
Vietnamese cuisine is one of the highlights of any holiday to Vietnam, and on day nine you’ll be getting hands-on with a cookery class at a local restaurant. The morning will begin with a visit to the local market, where you’ll find out more about the weird and wonderful produce on display and buy the ingredients for your lesson, then you’ll head back to the restaurant to get cooking.
For lunch you’ll tuck in to the fruits of your labours, before a final free afternoon at leisure in Hoi An.
Day 16-17: Ho Chi Minh city & city trip (B/L)
Ho Chi Minh City, the nation’s largest city, is your final stop before you leave Vietnam and journey into Cambodia.
After a final leisurely morning in Hoi An, your guide will collect you from your hotel and drive you back to Danang in time for your onward flight to Ho Chi Minh City, the energetic heart of modern Vietnam.
After arriving at your city centre hotel you will spend the rest of day ten exploring under your own steam. Your Info-Pack will have plenty of suggestions as to what to do and where to eat this evening.
On the morning of day 11, you’ll leave Ho Chi Minh City for the drive to the famous Cu Chi Tunnels, an incredible underground network of passages constructed by Vietnamese fighters (Viet Cong) during both the French and American wars.
You’ll begin your visit with the Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc sections of the tunnel, where you can imagine what it was like to be a guerrilla fighter, crawling through the narrow tunnels or climbing over captured US tanks. As a way of getting to grips with the complex and fascinating recent history of Vietnam, it doesn’t come more hands-on than this.
In the afternoon you’ll return to town and meet your guide to begin the Ben Thanh Market Challenge – a treasure-hunt-style introduction to Saigon’s liveliest district! Divide into teams or work together to overcome the tasks and puzzles set for you – each of which will teach you something about the local culture and encourage you to try new things while interacting with the people you meet.
If you would like fishing in Ho Chi Minh city, please mention this to us at the time of booking !
Day 18-21: Angkor Wat – Siem Reap (B/L)
Wave farewell to Vietnam this morning and take the short flight over the border for an exciting conclusion to your Indochina adventure.
As you arrive at Siem Reap Airport today, your guide will be waiting to collect you for the short drive into town. You will have some time to check in and freshen up at your hotel before reconvening with your guide this afternoon to begin the Cambodian leg of your journey.
To begin the day’s adventure, you will be travelling by tuk tuk with your guide to the jewel in Cambodia’s crown, the centrepiece of the Angkor Archaeological Park and erstwhile heart of the ancient Khmer Empire: Angkor Wat. Built during the 12th century, this vast temple features miles of intricate bas-relief carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and appears at the centre of the Cambodian national flag.
After your visit to Angkor Wat, your first day in Siem Reap will conclude with dinner accompanied by traditional dance entertainment.
Angkor Wat may be Cambodia’s most famous temple, but there is much more to the Angkor Archaeological Park for those who have the time to explore. The park, which covers an area of 400 square kilometres, contains examples of Khmer architecture from between the ninth and the 14th centuries – including a great many lesser-known temples and buildings in the process of being reclaimed by the jungle.
On day 19 you’ll head out to discover a few of these temples by bicycle with your guide, who will introduce you first to the ancient city of Angkor Thom, home to the great Bayon faces, then to atmospheric and overgrown Ta Prohm – which you and your family may recognise from the 2001 Tomb Raider film.
From here you’ll journey on to Sra Srang, a water basin reserved for the exclusive use of the ancient Khmer kings, where you’ll enjoy a lakeside picnic in the shade of eucalyptus trees. After lunch you’ll cycle back to your hotel, where you’ll have the rest of the afternoon free to spend as you see fit.
On the morning of day 20 you will depart from Siem Reap and make your way by private car to Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Here you will board a small boat and head to Kampong Phluck, a stilt house village on the banks of the water. Depending on the time of year, the houses either tower above the waterline or appear to float on its surface – the water lapping at the doorsteps.
You will disembark for a tasty picnic lunch at one of these floating houses, before returning to Siem Reap for a final leisurely afternoon before your family adventure comes to a close.
Your trip concludes on day 21, when your guide will take you back to the airport in time for your flight home.
